Job Summary

The Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist will serve as a clinical expert in perinatal care and will be responsible to provide essential perinatal clinical and didactic expertise; coordinate and participate in orientation and continuing education programs for OB and neonatal care nursing staff and residents; attain and maintain advanced level instructor certification for Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM), assume oversight of the EFM certification program and responsibility for future EFM credentialing, training for all OB care providers and nursing staff; participate in initiatives that focus on implementation of evidence based, clinical practice methodologies and processes and research activities. The Perinatal Clinical Unit Educator will work a minimum of 8 hours per week in the OB/Neonatal clinical setting and demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide education on new equipment, processes, and policies/protocols. The Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist will be an active member of the OB/GYN In-patient and Out-patient Quality Committees and serve as a clinical consultant for other Carilion facilities/practices.


Interacts frequently with nursing staff, physicians, students and other members of the health care team to coordinate care.  Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality.  Maintains accessibility throughout system and in the community as a resource person.  Moderate risk of exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials and combative patients.  High risk, stressful environment due to demands on time from multiple sources and need to shift priorities frequently.  Supports the Culture of Excellence and actively practices the Carilion Health System Mission, Values, and Guiding Principles.


The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.  As such, the individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.


Provides direct/indirect specialized, comprehensive care, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention and collaborative management strategies. Participates in clinical, educational, leadership, consultant and research activities of service area.  Provides leadership in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and standards of practice.  Provides 24x7 support for nursing and targeted patient populations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing required.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of Perinatal care experience. 


Current nursing licensure and specialty certification.  Registration as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the state of Virginia or will obtain within six months of hire. 


Additional certification(s) specific to business unit may be required: i.e. OB/GYN requires OB certification; and EFM certification desired.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills.   Excellent presentation skills.     Ability to think globally and communicate a vision.
