A word from our chair

"I lead Neurosurgery at Carilion because this is a place where exceptional clinical care, academic purpose, and deep commitment to community come together. Our faculty bring fellowship-trained expertise across the major neurosurgical subspecialties, and we are proud to provide advanced, multidisciplinary care that allows patients in our region to receive world-class neurosurgical treatment close to home. What defines our department most is a shared dedication to treating patients as we would members of our own family, while training the next generation of neurosurgeons and advancing discovery through meaningful research collaborations.

A few words and phrases that reflect our department culture and what makes Carilion Neurosurgery an attractive place to practice include: patient-first, dedicated, collaborative, subspecialized, multidisciplinary, innovative, academically engaged, research-oriented, community-rooted, family-centered, committed to access, and committed to excellence.

We also have important research collaborations with Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. These partnerships strengthen our academic mission and create opportunities for faculty, residents, and students to advance discovery alongside clinical care. We are also deeply committed to training the next generation of neurosurgeons and are proud that four of our previous residency graduates have chosen to return to our program after fellowship training."
