A word from our chair

"I joined the Carilion Clinic–Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (CC-VTCSOM) Department of Surgery as Chair in 2017, drawn by the opportunity to lead within a distinctive academic health system born from the innovative public-private partnership between Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech established in 2007. This collaboration is transforming health care by educating the physician leaders of tomorrow while advancing our shared mission to improve the health of the communities we serve.

The Department of Surgery is defined by a culture of service, responding to unmet health care and social needs while providing state-of-the-art surgical care. We are committed to educating the next generation of physicians, surgeons, and leaders through excellence in undergraduate and graduate medical education. Equally, we are dedicated to discovery; advancing the scientific understanding of surgical disease and generating the knowledge that will shape the future of surgical practice and improve patient outcomes."
Michael S. Nussbaum, MD, FACS, MAMSE
