Provides support to the Medical Staff Committees and coordinates peer review processes for blood usage, deaths, restraints; and other quality indicators.  Ensures reporting of data through appropriate committee structures.  Coordinates all aspects of credentialing of the hospital medical staff.  Coordinates policy management for the hospital.


Coordinates functions of the Medical Staff Committees by preparing agendas, recording minutes, and identifying needed follow-up.  Ensures Medical Staff Performance Improvement activities are appropriately performed and documented.  Assists in other PI activities and investigation of quality of care concerns as needed.


The Medical Staff Specialist interacts with physicians, members of the hospital administrative team, management and employees of the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.  Deals with highly confidential, complex and/or sensitive issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required.  Associates degree preferred.

Experience: Three years experience in an in an office setting, preferably within an acute care hospital setting.  Demonstrated knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software.  Previous work with a Medical Staff Services or credentialing preferred.  

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CPCS certification preferred.

Other Minimum Qualifications:  Computer skills in Microsoft package and data base management.  Ability to problem solve and work under pressure required.  Highly organized and able to simultaneously manage numerous tasks/projects within established timeframes.  Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with ability to be flexible.  Good interpersonal communication, both verbal and written. AHA BLS- HCP required within 6 months of hire.
