As a member of the Trauma Team participates in clinical, educational, leadership, consultant and research activities related to complex and critically injured patients. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards of practice. Supports the integration and application of evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills to provide optimal healthcare outcomes for critically injured and complex patients.  

Performs specific job responsibilities:
 

  • Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process based on evidence-based practice, current research and national standards.
  • Provides highly complex assessment, care planning, treatment and discharge/transition planning and placement to specified patients.
  • Provides leadership in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to implement outcome-focused patient care needs.
  • Develops evidence-based clinical interventions and processes to achieve defined patient and system outcomes. 
  • Coordinates care of patients with use of system and community resources to assure successful health/illness/wellness transitions, enhance delivery of care and achieve optimal patient outcomes. 
  • Provides leadership in establishing and implementing goals related to nursing practice and participates in decision-making processes which impact nursing practice at all levels. 
  • In collaboration with nursing leadership, takes initiative to identify opportunities to enhance clinical practice of staff and develop effective strategies for improvement.
  • Evaluates quality improvement data and formulates evidence-based recommendations in addressing those that impact the provision of care.
  • Critically analyzes research findings and recommends evidence-based practice changes to improve patient outcomes. Mentors nurses to acquire new skills, clinical judgment and effectively incorporate evidence into practice.
  • Collaborates and mentors others in research and quality management projects and initiatives to promote best practices at the organizational and systems level.
  • Designs and implements education appropriate to patient and family needs and abilities.
  • Assist in providing community education and/or participates in community service organizations on healthcare and legislative issues, delivery of patient care, and injury prevention in collaboration with the Trauma Outreach Coordinator.

What We Require:


Education: Graduate of School of Professional with Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) required. Master’s degree in healthcare related field strongly preferred.

Experience: Minimum of five years recent trauma critical care nursing experience with responsibilities reflecting direct patient care, teaching and research. Experience in championing healthcare performance improvement and research projects required. Experience in public speaking and teaching required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Current Commonwealth of Virginia nursing licensure and current specialty certification such as CEN, CCRN, TCRN or ACTN from the required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Self-directed. Team player. Able to think globally. Must be current in BLS. Completion of either TNCC, TCAR or ACTN required within six months of hire. Prehospital experience helpful.
