The Acute Care Surgery Service (ACS) has an exciting opportunity for an Advance Practice Provider (APP) looking to join the Advance Practice team under Surgical Critical Care (SCC) at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH). CRMH is a 737-bed full-service tertiary/quaternary care academic health center, it is the flagship institution of Carilion Clinic. CRMH has been certified as the region's only Level 1 trauma center since 1983. With a coverage area of more than a 15,000-square-mile that includes two major interstates and thousands of acres of national forest. CRMH has the busiest Emergency Department in the state of Virginia due to its large catchment area. ACS is the umbrella surgery service covering three divisions: Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. The ACS APP service consists of 14 Full Time APPs, 5 Flex Time APPs and 2 APP Fellows. The ACS APP leadership structure is made up of APPs and is focused on optimizing and supporting the performance of the APP group to improve productivity, job satisfaction, talent utilization and maximization of scope of practice. Hours are 5A-6P, rotating weekends, rotating holidays.
Surgical Critical Care is the branch that manages the critical care needs of Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery and other patients requiring critical care management in a Surgical Intensive Care unit.
ACS APPs also benefit from extensive educational opportunities through Carilion's partnerships with Virginia Tech Carilion Medical School and Radford University Carilion. Working alongside Surgical fellows, residents, medical students and APP students allows for access to formal educational lectures, education on rounds, educational break out sessions during the day as well as just in time education when the need arises.
Distinct functions of the APP position include patient management, clinical decision making, bedside procedures (including bedside incision and drainage, chest tube placement, and removal, wound repair, wound management, drain management, central lines, dialysis catheters, arterial lines), and teaching of patients, family, and staff. Other opportunities may include research involvement, quality and process improvement, peer review committees and shared governance.
The APP will perform the following: history and physicals; order and interpret tests; make preliminary diagnosis; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patient and/or prescribe medication. The APP works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including Attending Physicians, Fellows, Residents, other APPs, medical and APP students, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Pharmacists, Case Managers, Social workers, Consultants and more. The team's goal is to deliver high quality, best practice, timely, cost-effective care.
While the primary service for this position is the Trauma/Neuro/Surgical ICUs, The APP will be able to provide care from the initial consult, throughout the hospital stay in the ICU/PCU/Floor, to disposition, and perform outpatient follow-up in the clinic. The APP is exceptional at maintaining a patient-family centered focus throughout the hospital course and are vital in the management of complex social situations and planning for a safe and successful hospital discharge and ensuring proper follow-up to minimize need for readmissions.
CRMH is located in Roanoke, Virginia. The city is the center of one of Virginia's largest metropolitan regions, and a hub for transportation, finance, and industry in southwestern Virginia. The city boasts proximity to the Blue Ridge range of the greater Appalachian mountains with access to favorite sections of the Appalachian trail as well as the Roanoke River and Smith Mountain Lake.
What We Require:
Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program required.
Experience: Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred
Licensure/Certification: Current Physician Assistants license (PA) required. DEA licensure required. AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced life support is preferred and is required for those who may use a defibrillator in their practice.
Other: Meets credentialing requirements. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic’s malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
