Job Summary

Fellowship opportunity available for PAs and NPs. Participate in a 12 month intense training program in Emergency Medicine, consisting of patient care in a Level 1 Trauma Center as well as rural and community Emergency Departments. Off-service rotations in anesthesia, orthopedics, cardiology, critical care medicine, hospitalist medicine, pediatric EM, ophthalmology, EMS, and prehospital air transport. Intensive ultrasound training, as well as advanced procedure and simulation lab training. Certification training includes; ATLS/BLS/ACLS/PALS/FCCS/AWLS. The applicant must be a licensed PA or NP by the start of the fellowship in January 2020. The applicant’s licensure must extend to the care of both pediatric and adult patients.

The Fellow demonstrates knowledge and competency of core skills related to emergency medicine that serves as a basis for continued growth and progression of skills and pace. The candidate must pass regular core competency assessments, participate in lecture and ground rounds, be proficient in simulation lab exercises and demonstrate patient care skills. The Fellow role is applicable for a 12 month period. Fellows must consistently meet targets for professionalism, clinical effectiveness, and patient safety in order to remain in the fellowship.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Fellow serves as a member of a collaborative health team made up of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, technicians and various support personnel. With physician collaboration, the fellow provides quality service in a caring and professional manner, actively supporting team efforts to ensure cost effectiveness and service excellence. The Fellow role includes responsibility for identifying the patient's health and medical status through taking of health histories; performing physical examinations; initiating screening and diagnostic procedures; management of trauma, surgical (as appropriate)and critical care needs, management of acute health problems; health maintenance and education as well as clinical management of unstable, stable, acute and chronically ill patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Nurse Practitioner Program required.

Experience: Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred, but not required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Current Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioner license (Virginia) required. DEA licensure required. AHA BLS, ACLS, PALs certification required during orientation.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets credentialing requirements. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic's malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
