Job Summary

Post graduate Fellowship opportunity available for PAs and NPs. Participate in a 12-month intense training program in Orthopaedic Surgery, consisting of 4 weeks of didactic training followed by 11 months of subspecialty training within Orthopaedics. The applicant must be a licensed NP or PA by the start of the fellowship, which typically is the end of January. The candidate will undergo weekly quizzes and three core tests throughout the year to track progress. The fellow will participate in journal clubs, lecture series and ground rounds. Fellows must consistently meet targets for professionalism, clinical effectiveness, and patient safety in order to remain in the fellowship.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Fellow serves as a member of a collaborative health team made up of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nursing staff, technicians and various support personnel. The Fellow’s role includes responsibility for identifying the patient's health and medical status through taking of health histories; performing physical examinations; initiating screening and diagnostic procedures; management of trauma and acute Orthopaedic problems; health maintenance and clinical management of stable and chronically ill patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Nurse Practitioner Program required.


Experience: Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Current Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioner license (Virginia) required. DEA licensure required. AHA BLS, ACLS, PALs certification required during orientation. RNFA (if applicable) required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets credentialing requirements. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic's malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
