Job Summary

The Carilion Clinic Senior Director of OB/GYN Quality will lead performance improvement projects and patient safety initiatives for women and infants.  Responsible to keep projects/initiatives on track within established timelines, maintaining quality control, and remaining within their defined scope of work.


Work in collaboration with Women’s Quality Medical Director and associated departments to provide leadership, consultation and guidance to administrative staff and medical leadership in executing regulatory standards and performance improvement initiatives. Establish goals that meet or exceed national benchmarks.  Serve as lead department participant for safety event reporting and follow-up with Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety Department and Infection Control. 


Work in collaboration with in-patient and ambulatory senior leaders and others to facilitate the planning, development, and education of the clinical staff/providers to meet environment of care and clinical standards as appropriate.  Work with Project Analyst to validate/monitor data and prepare performance reports to appropriate internal departments, publicly reported external regulatory agencies and Pay-for-Performance measures.  Conduct concurrent chart reviews for validation and reporting.  


Prepare and conduct presentations to update leadership, physicians, and employees on key in-patient and ambulatory clinical initiatives. As requested, present projects/performance improvement outcomes and/or represent Carilion Clinic at regional, state and national conferences.  Serve as Co-Facilitator for Carilion Womens Clinical Practice Team and OB/GYN Medical Peer Review Committee.


Participate in regional, state and national patient safety and outcome improvement initiatives related to women and infants. Maintain awareness of national trends/new clinical care modalities and serve as resource for disseminating new standards.   Responsible for assessment of regional perinatal education needs and implementation of services/education to meet identified needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Master’s Degree or equivalent 12 years of experience required.  

If the area(s) of responsibility employ and have responsibility for supervising RNs, a Master's degree is required and a nursing degree at the minimum of the BSN level is required for Magnet compliance pending the area is within the Magnet scope.


Experience: 5-7years experience in management, preferably health care environment, demonstrating increased and/or diversified responsibility for related services.


Licensure:  Licensure and/or certification in medical or management related discipline.  Registered Nurse required.


Other Minimum Qualifications:  Advanced leadership, planning and organizational skills to manage multiple and potentially large, complex departments and to direct the successful completion of initiatives and achievement of fiscal goals.  Demonstrated interpersonal and communication abilities to support and promote a respectful, inclusive culture of service excellence.  Proven skills in clinical, operational and human resource management, including staffing, planning, performance management, team work and process improvement.  Statistical analysis and fiscal management skills.
