Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence for weight loss surgery. Join a team of medical specialists including psychologists, nutritionists, and surgeons working together to help patients succeed in permanent weight loss.

There are 3 types of surgery that the patient could undergo including, Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, and Duodenal Switch. The Clinical Psychologist plays a key role in helping to determine if surgery is the right choice for the patient. They provide individual psychotherapy both pre- and post-surgery. This involves addressing a variety of psychological conditions pertinent to one's eating habits, body image, and the overall bariatric process.

Additionally, they assess the patient’s knowledge, expectations, plans, and preparation for surgery. While also ensuring that the patient understands the post operation lifestyle requirements.

The Clinical Psychologist can work in office or remote, as these appointments are done virtually. We typically schedule a 2-hour consultation and then the Clinical Psychologist will make their recommendation. This could include follow-up sessions, clearance for surgery, or a referral for further psych services.

During the initial consult, the Clinical Psychologist will evaluate the patient for the following:

  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Eating disorders/behaviors
  • Mental health concerns
  • Psychosocial history
  • Education/Occupational history
  • Psychiatric history
  • Sleep
  • Coping abilities
  • Family and social support

Join a great team of mission driven specialists and professionals dedicated to patient care and help us improve the health of the communities that we serve.
