Carilion Clinic has a full time Clinical Psychologist opportunity available.  Must have licensure as a clinical psychologist in Virginia.  Psychologist should demonstrate expertise in play therapy and family therapy and possess a level of professional maturity to teach Child Fellows in supervision and didactic presentations about clinical work with children and their families. Hours are primarily 8am- 5pm with some early evening hours for clinical care.


Department Overview

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry cares for children and adolescents who may have atypical development, need help adjusting to significant stresses, or may be experiencing the onset of mental illnesses or substance use disorders.  
Outpatient services are available for children and adolescents both in Roanoke and in the New River Valley. Our child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists can work with families to assess and treat many of the mental illnesses that commonly present in childhood. We work together with families to find treatment plans and therapies that will help. When appropriate, we may suggest therapy, medication, or both. Our outpatient providers can help children and adolescents who may be struggling with: 
Autism and developmental disorders
Anxiety disorders
Early life stress and traumas
Mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder
Thought disorders and early onset psychosis
Eating disorders
Conduct and disruptive behavior disorders
Substance use disorders
Impulse control disorders
Gender identity concerns 
Learning problems
We offer inpatient services at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke. The inpatient unit serves children ages 5-17. Inpatient treatment involves crisis stabilization, diagnostic assessment, individual and family therapy, and group therapies. Our inpatient group therapies include coping skills groups, music therapy groups, and art therapy groups, each of which help children cope with the difficulties that brought them to treatment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Ph.D., Psy.D. or D.A. (Doctor of Arts) in Psychology from an APA accredited graduate school required.


Experience: Two years clinical experience which may include the year of internship required.  The second year must be post-graduate and include supervision by a licensed Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist.


Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Licensed by Virginia by the Board of Medicine as a clinical psychologist or by the Board of Psychology as a Psychologist (Clinical)

Must have de-escalation training successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained annually going forward when working in the inpatient environment.


Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets credentialing requirements. Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with physicians and other health care providers.  Must have a commitment to continuing education.
