Job Summary

The System Engineer – Cloud is responsible for any technological duties associated with cloud computing, including design, planning, management, maintenance and support.  The System Engineer – Cloud will follow guiding principles provide by the Solution Architects ensuring compliance with Enterprise Architecture standards to provide the organization with well designed, complaint, stable, and valuable highly productive IT systems to meet operational demands, limit disruptions and create opportunities with the longer-term strategic vision of the organization. 


Dutities & Responsibilities may inlclude but not limited: 

  • Analyzes, optimizes, implements, and maintains the Carilion Clinic Multi-Platform cloud based back-end computing environment.  
  • Implements, and maintains security technologies for all Multi-Platform Server-based systems throughout the enterprise.
  • Researches, audits, tests, and sets standards for server operating systems, hardware, server virtualization, and cloud technologies to ensure compatibility and functionality in the enterprise.
  • Implements Group Policy and scripts (using various technologies) to manipulate cloud server functionality to meet business and security needs in the enterprise.
  • Independently develops reference materials (network diagrams, installation documentation, etc.) for supported network technologies to be used for both online and in-person training of other technical staff.
  • Lead the deployment and operation of C2S Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) , RDS, EMR, LAMBDA, VPC, S3, and other cloud related infrastructure components
  • Report on the health of the cloud services to leadership, providing detailed information around both lifecycle and cost management.
  • Support project execution activities from implementation through operational readiness.
  • Serve as overall subject matter expert on cloud engineer technology and market capabilities/trends.
  • Make recommendations for improvements to security, scalability, manageability, and performance across a wide variety of cloud network, storage, and compute technologies.
  • Formulate detailed network, storage, and compute design specifications for stable and secure computing operations in a dynamic cloud-based environment.
  • Liaise with customers, architecture leadership and technical teams, including systems and network administrators, security engineers, and IT Support teams.
  • Execute architecture blueprints and bring it to reality with a DevSecOps mindset & culture.
  • Build and configure build plans, code pipelines and create automated solutions that can be frame worked and re-used.
  • Manages assigned projects and meets deadlines with minimal supervision from Supervisor and/or Manager.
  • Serves as both a professional and technical mentor to other System Engineers.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
 

Experience: Minimum five years’ experience in computer electronics and/or system administration of Windows, *nix platforms to include hardware maintenance.Experience in microcomputers and supporting telecommunications hardware/software required.
 

Licensure/Certification: Valid Virginia drivers' license and dependable transportation
 

Preferred:

A minimum of two of the following certifications are required:

 

CompTIA Server+

Microsoft MCSE

IBM Certified System Administrator AIX

CompTIA Linux+

Citrix CCEE for XenApp Server 6 (or greater)

VMWare Certified Professional

 

Additionally, any of the following are preferred, but not required:

 

Citrix CCAA

Citrix CCIA

CompTIA Network+

CompTIA Security+

RHCT Certification

IBM Certified Systems Expert – Enterprise Technical Support

IBM Certified Systems Expert – Virtualization Technical Support for AIX

IBM Certified Systems Expert – High Availability for AIX
 

Other: Good organizational skills, analytical, dependable, detail oriented, interpersonal skills, and understanding of the English language (both written and oral).  Must have thorough understanding of the 7-layer OSI model.  VMWare, Citrix, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange/O365, IBM AIX and/or Linux experience preferred.  Must have excellent problem-solving skills and be customer service oriented.
