How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:


The Director of Usability will lead the Carilion Clinic Medical Device Usability Group (CCMDUG), overseeing client acquisition, team management, and usability studies. Responsibilities include conducting and supervising usability assessments such as observations, interviews, surveys, system evaluations, risk analyses, and performance testing. The Director will manage task allocation, foster team collaboration, and ensure high-quality service based on usability best practices and human factors science.

Additionally, this role will maintain communication with stakeholders, build a client base to sustain CCMDUG financially, and operate from the Carilion Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety, utilizing simulation and human factors resources as needed. The position will serve clients locally, statewide, regionally, and beyond.
 

  • Client Acquisition & Relationship Management
    • Develop new business opportunities and maintain strong client relationships.
    • Provide exceptional customer service, addressing client needs and requests.
    • Build and sustain short- and long-term client engagements.
    • Deliver clear and effective communication and presentations.
  • Team Leadership & Usability Research
    • Hire, lead, and manage a team of usability experts.
    • Oversee and execute usability assessments, including:
      • User Research: Observations (Ethnography), Interviews (Contextual Inquiry, Focus Groups), Surveys.
      • System & Risk Evaluation: Legacy System Evaluation, Benchmark Testing, Hazard Analysis, Use-FMEA.
      • Testing & Data Analysis: Task Analysis, Comprehension Studies (IFU, Training), Formative & Summative Testing, Adverse Event Investigation.
  • Project & Stakeholder Collaboration
    • Develop and manage statements of work and project plans.
    • Partner with Carilion’s Simulation Center for usability testing.
    • Support internal inventors and key stakeholders in the New River Valley biotech corridor.

What We Require:


Education: Master’s degree in Human Factors, Usability Engineering or related field required. PhD preferred.

Experience: Six years of experience in medical device usability engineering required. Leadership experience client engagement and project management preferred.

  • Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams. 
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; ability to engage with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Usability Expertise: Proficiency in usability testing methods, tools, and human factors principles. 
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Strong critical thinking skills to assess data, identify issues, and implement solutions. 
  • Business Development: Demonstrated track record in sales and client relationship management. 
  • Presentation & Writing: Skilled in delivering compelling presentations and producing clear, concise documentation. 
  • Flexibility: Willingness to travel as required.
