Job Summary

Come join team Carilion as an Operations Manager for our Ground and EMS Divisions.  Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation operates six ground ambulance bases and one primary EMS/911 base in Southwest Virginia.  We pride ourselves in putting the Carilion Clinic values in action, from providing medical support at community events with our EMS bike team to training with our medical director in the state-of-the art Carilion Clinic simulation center aimed at enhancing our commitment to the delivery of exceptional medical care. Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation (CCPT) is the largest transport agency in the region, providing emergency and non-emergency basic life support and advanced life support ambulance transportation from our bases in Giles, Radford, Lexington, Hardy, Rocky Mount, and Roanoke.  CCPT employs 180 ground EMS providers and maintains a fleet of 40 ambulances that are permitted and staffed for advanced life support.  The Ground/EMS operations manager reports directly to the Ground/EMS program director and will work closely with our Communications Center and each of our Ground/EMS clinical team leaders to manage operations, personnel, develop performance improvement projects, ensure regulatory accreditation, and promote employee engagement. 

 

The Ground/EMS Operations Manager will manage approximately 90 FTEs including FT and Flex/PRN EMS employees and 22 ambulances in the Roanoke Fleet. Patient Volume for the Roanoke base runs 16,000-18,000 runs per year and 30,000 annually for the entire company.
 

Provides day to day leadership for successful implementation of goals and objectives for a department. Responsibilities include planning of budget and managing expenses. Communicates, organizes, prioritizes, leads, facilitates, coaches and problem solves with reporting staff to ensure that goals and objectives are met. Works with other service line leaders to carry out new health care services and performance improvement initiatives. Positively and appropriately represents Carilion Clinic at public and professional meetings. May provide direct patient care.
 

  • Responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of a department as they relate to goals and objectives. Organizes, manages and controls departmental functions and resources in a collaborative and participative manner for optimal performance of service.
  • Coordinates resources to provide adequate staffing for department. Demonstrates effective team building and leadership skills. Establishes day-to-day priorities and directs staff task assignments. Facilitates teams in problem solving processes.
  • Monitors and evaluates customer satisfaction with services. Collaboratively develops and implements programs to continuously enhance customer satisfaction within the service in conjunction with senior service line management. 
  • Facilitates professional growth and development including the provision or inservice programming and an effective performance appraisal process.
  • Responsible for implementation of department budget and monitoring of expenses.  
  • Responsible for supporting service line mission, goals and scorecard objectives.  
  • Creates a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with standards and which is respectful of patient’s rights. Monitors and evaluates quality, appropriateness and safety of the care provided by the department.
  • Communicates appropriate information to stakeholders in an ongoing, timely and accurate fashion. Establishes forums for staff to engage in open and proactive two-way communication.

Minimum Qualifications


Education: Bachelors required. 8 years of equivalent EMS Leadership experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors degree. Must be graduate of an approved school or EMS program. 

Experience: 3 years supervisory or CTL experience in a healthcare setting required. Previous work experience in Air Medevac, Dispatch, Ground EMS, Pediatric-Neonatal transport care, Critical Care Nursing, or Transfer Center preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License/Certification is required, based upon discipline. EMS certification must be Intermediate or Paramedic. AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit. 

Other Minimum Qualifcations: Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, team leadership, priority setting and work competency skills. Promotes a respectful, inclusive culture of service excellence.
