Applicants without Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation will be considered for Investment Operations and Risk Manager position, which will focus on investment operations exclusively.

The Investment Operations and Risk Director is a key role in the Carilion Investment Office, supporting and overseeing investment operations, reporting, risk management and research. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees investment operations, financial reporting, audit, risk management and external vendor relationship of custodian bank, Northern Trust, and its portfolio analytics platform, Front Office Solutions.
  • Responsible for execution of monthly and quarterly performance reporting, working with external performance reporting third party, as well as ongoing capital call, cash flow and investment documentation execution.   
  • Works closely with, manages and develops Investment Analyst who supports all aspect of the Investment Office, including investment operations, risk management, portfolio management and research projects.
  • Coordinates with third party specialty operations due diligence (ODD) service provider in evaluating investment operations of investment firms under consideration, as well as ongoing annual ODD monitoring of investment firms in the portfolios.
  • Ensures the Investment Office investment process and portfolio composition continuously adheres to the Investment Policy Statement (IPS) and internal controls and compliance.
  • Develops analytical reports and assessments on overall asset allocation, portfolio positioning and investment strategies, as well as on individual companies as part of the direct investment program.
  • Supports top investment officer in portfolio strategic asset allocation, tactical positioning and investment process execution.
  • Also has opportunity to take on portfolio coverage of part of the investment strategies in the portfolios (e.g., public markets).
  • Investment coverage role involves ongoing monitoring of existing assigned investments in the portfolios, as well as leading investment due diligence and underwriting of potential new investments under considering in the assigned category.
  • Develops strong relationships and knowledge of investment firms to help build long-term partnerships with Carilion and the investment firms.
  • Prepares written summary notes on investment updates or developments of assigned firms for discussion at one of our weekly investment team meetings (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) to debate any recommended allocation changes in our portfolios.
  • Keeps abreast of investment and macro-economic trends through networking and our various subscription resources to help support accretive portfolio management decisions

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. Master's degree preferred.

Experience: Twelve years or more investment or relevant experience

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:  Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) required for Director. Non-CFA applicants will be considered for a Manager position.

Other Minimum Qualifications: 
Working knowledge and experience with investment operations, fundamental and quantitative analysis, risk management tools and a broad understanding of various asset classes. Advanced reasoning skills and the proven ability to think independently and intuitively. Demonstrated team building and leadership skills
