Pharmacy Operations Director works to support the vision of the Department of Pharmacy which is “Optimizing patient outcomes through integrated delivery of quality pharmaceutical care" and the mission of the institution. Responsible for general Pharmacy Department operations and Admixture Services. Responsibilities include oversight for medication order processing, distribution, internal logistics, compounding of medications including sterile IV and non-sterile products, satellite pharmacies and pharmacy and clinic adherence to regulatory and third party requirements.  Secondary responsibility for automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) equipment utilization. Responsible for fiscal and human resource management of these areas.
 

  • Develops and/or refines systems for medication order processing and distribution of drugs within the hospitals; ensures timely availability of medications for patient care.
  • Responsible for developing and managing operational and capital budget for the operations and IV Admixture.
  • Oversees utilization of the automated dispensing equipment in the hospitals to include inspections and inventory management of medications.  
  • Initiates and/or participates in performance improvement activities related to IV practices, non-IV practices or other Pharmacy areas of focus. Develops formal performance improvement strategies related to order entry, drug preparation including sterile IV production, dispensing, delivery and record-keeping.  
  • Promotes adherence to Formulary Management and Clinical Services protocols, processes and guidelines through general Pharmacy operations.
  • Provide direct supervision for assigned staff. Assures adequate supply of trained, competent Pharmacists and Technicians to provide order entry, preparation and distribution services to the patient care areas through good hiring practices, setting direction, counseling and performance appraisals of assigned staff. Participates in development of orientation and continuing education for staff. 
  • Retains competency necessary to perform, support and evaluate staff Pharmacist duties. Serves as PIC for CRMH and appoints PIC for other Roanoke hospital locations
  • Maintains general expertise and knowledge in all areas of IV admixture. Sets standards for IV related practices both within the Pharmacy and within the hospital setting according to Joint Commission, USP 797 and other regulatory criteria that will protect patients from erroneous or contaminated products.  
  • Establishes quality controls and monitors to ensure that IV prep areas and products with the department meet environmental quality standards.
  • Assures staff within the department is appropriately hired, trained and skilled to perform admixture procedures for all patient populations; assures continued competence of staff.  Responsible for directing, counseling and completing performance appraisals of assigned staff.
  • Complies with all Joint Commission and other regulatory standards related to Pharmacy Services.  
  • Directs the daily operations of the Pharmacy. Supervises staff, interfaces with other services and departments in providing Pharmacy services and meeting customer needs.  

What We Require:


Education: Must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Pharmacy residency in a clinical specialty preferred. PharmD, MS, MHA, MSHA, or MBA preferred.  

Experience: Five (5) years practice in hospital pharmacy or previous management experience required.    

Licensure, registration, and/or certification: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from employment with Carilion Clinic.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be knowledgeable in the basic aspects of institutional pharmacy practice and the detailed and multi-faceted aspects of the position. Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Requires knowledge and skills of general office equipment, computers and keyboarding ability.
Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Must possess effective leadership skills. Must possess excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
