SVP, Hospital Operations 

Carilion Medical Center 

 

In conjunction with the Executive Vice President, the SVP of Hospital Operations for Carilion Medical Center (“SVP”) leads the development of Carilion Medical Center’s goals aligned with the system. The SVP provides leadership for the day-to-day operations at Carilion Medical Center. This position provides leadership with a patient centric culture. The incumbent forges enduring partnerships throughout Carilion Medical Center and the system, and with physicians, management, and staff.

The SVP ensures all action taken and methods used are consistent with and promotes Carilion Clinic’s mission, vision, and values. This position reports to the Executive Vice President/System COO.

Job Duties Include:

  • Assists the EVP in the development of a Carilion Medical Center operational and business plan (short-term and long-term tactics). Collaborates with system leaders for input, buy-in and support.
  • Provides the leadership and oversight of the day-to-day operations of Carilion Medical Center to ensure clinical quality and patient experience is optimized while cost effectiveness and financial vitality are maintained and enhanced.
  • Provides the leadership with and drives the development of the annual operational and capital budgets, and ensures meets/exceeds financial targets.
  • Drives towards a patient centric and engaging culture for physicians and employees.
  • Works with leaders on access, staffing, supply chain, capacity, and other matters to ensure financial sustainability and meeting targets.
  • Provides the leadership to improve management effectiveness by creating and sustaining an environment of trust, ensuring ongoing and relevant communications with employees, creating opportunities for employees to contribute to improvement initiatives, and connecting how employees’ work at all levels contributes to the patient experience.
  • Develops and sustains a talented, diverse, and action-oriented operations team recognized for responsiveness, innovation, and outstanding performance.
  • Establishes a culture of accountability, and drives an unrelenting passion for excellence that demonstrates top tier performance and cutting edge innovation.
  • Supports “Systemness” and standardization.
  • Partners with physicians and leaders in the development and implementation of quality improvement, performance improvement, and patient safety programs.
  • Establishes a presence in the community and becomes an active and visible participant in community-related activities.
  • Oversees the development of innovative programs that improve access, quality care, patient experience and growth to expand Carilion’s footprint.
  • Seeks and obtains input from leaders and the medical staff regarding new programs plans and direction.
  • Attend appropriate leadership and senior management team meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

A Master’s degree and ten (10) years of experience is required in health care, nursing, business or related field and five (5) years of leadership experience in a large, complex, and integrated delivery system, large hospital, or health system.
