The Senior Director - Accounting supervises General Accounting management team and directs accounting functions, including financial statement preparation. Ensures proper oversight of account reconciliations and transaction research and treatment to support financial statement integrity.
1. Serves as a member of management team.
2. Directs the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.  Ensures proper review of other data included in internally or externally produced reports, financial statements, or surveys, including the creation of ad hoc statements or combined entity statements and accompanying statistics.
3. Manages and ensures the proper reconciliation of accounts and major accounting functions.
4. Directs the annual consolidated financial statement audit and oversees other audits and regulatory-required reviews and certifications.  Oversees the completion of the audit report , including preparation and content of footnotes.
5. Directs and oversees implementation of new accounting standards.
6. Analyzes accounting impact of proposed contracts, purchases, and other business opportunities;  recommending changes and ensuring proper accounting execution.
7. Analyzes operational issues affecting accounting outcomes or financial statements, and documents those for financial statement explanations or audit footnotes.
8. Directs preparation and reviews accounting estimates, including (but not restricted to) major estimates for depreciation expense, AR allowances for bad debt and uncompensated care, and employee benefits.
9. Makes decisions on treatment and execution of accounting transactions, and resolves problems and analyzes complex events for accounting ramifications.  Is expected to find unique and efficient ways to solve difficult and complex problems.  Advises management on existence and treatment of complex and material transactions.
10. Works with peers to ensure proper ongoing education on accounting topics relevant to their roles, including development of new GAAP or changed accounting treatments generated from within accounting or finance teams.  Maintains policies and procedures for accounting areas that promote financial integrity, and ensures proper review with stakeholders prior to any material changes.
11. Maintains effective working relationships with finance, revenue cycle management, treasury, internal audit, tax, decision support, and insurance departments, as well as external auditors.
12. Promotes Carilion Clinic’s Culture of Excellence and quality service through teamwork, respectful communication, maintenance of a professional environment, partnership with those we serve, and anticipation of patient and customer needs.
13. Supervises Accounting Director(s) and Managers.  Works with them to promote talent acquisition and development, including maintaining educational development and training for staff.
14. Provides timely, accurate, cost-effective services, ensuring the protection and wise us of our patients’ and communities’ assets.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or business administration.  Master’s degree in business administration or related field desirable

Experience: Seven years experience in finance, accounting or financial planning. Experience in healthcare accounting and/or finance is preferred.

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CPA desirable
