Provides strategic direction and leadership to ensure the delivery of quality and innovative services through directing, coordinating, planning, evaluating and communicating evidence-based practice, nursing research and QA/QI, related nursing professional development. Provides strategic direction and oversight for a comprehensive nursing excellence program across all practice environments, including document preparation, submission, and site visits to meet and exceed criteria for the ANCC Magnet® and Pathway to Excellence® Recognition Programs.


Collaborates with Carilion Clinic management team, physicians, and direct reports to support the mission and facilitate accomplishment of goals and objectives. Works cooperatively with organizations leaders and managers to plan for the application of research and evidence-based practice findings to improve patient care outcomes.  Responsible for ongoing communication of  the link between the value of nursing’s performance and nursing excellence with mission, vision, values.


Provides leadership and direction, including setting objectives, planning, staffing and directing activities toward common organization goals.  Communicates, organizes, prioritizes, leads, facilitates, coaches and problem-solves with other members of management and patient care teams to ensure cost-effective, quality patient services which enhance customer satisfaction.  Has 24-hour accountability for the management of nursing research and excellence practices for patients of all ages.



Leads nursing research and application of evidence enterprise wide. Implements formal approach for development and application of research processes for translation of organizations goals. Serves as a liaison and central point of contact for research and QA/QI activities within nursing services. Ensures nursing research endeavors comply with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accrediting standards through collaboration with the Carilion Offices of Research & Development and Human Research Protections Office.  Responsible for the operational goals and re-designation plans related to ANCC Magnet® and Pathway to Excellence® designations. Oversees all aspects of the ANCC recognition processes, including interim monitoring reporting and the reapplication process.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Doctorate Degree required. BSN Required. MSN Preferred. PhD Preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years experience in Nursing and Management experience required. Research experience preferred. Proven leadership experience required. Minimum of five (5) years leadership and management experience required, demonstrating increased and.or diversified responsibility. Minimum of four (4) years experience in Project Management with responsibility for leadership of large projects required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: VA RN License

Other Minimum Qualifications: Advanced communications and research consulting skills necessary to effectively direct operational changes in practices to achieve goals. Proven ability to collaborate with nursing staff and councils to identify the need for practice changes, research topics, education, and areas for investigation. Experience supporting the dissemination and utilization of current healthcare research in support of evidence-based nursing practices. Customer focused with collaborative problem solving orientation. Excellent project management skills.
