Job Summary

This position manages the Carilion Medical Center's Violent Injury Recovery and Support Program (VIRS). The manager coordinates program functions with health care and community colleagues under the direction of the Director of Trauma Services.  This position provides leadership to the VIRS program and staff, focusing efforts on managing  a patients physical, physiological, and economic needs after discharge, expediting follow up care as appropriate, reducing and /or eliminating barriers to transition of care, and assisting in the management of patient and family expectations.  This manager must exhibit the ability to communicate, organize, prioritize, mentor, and problem solve with all members of the facility and with community stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective quality patient care and follow up.

  • Under the direction of Trauma Program Director, the VIRS Program Manager will provide hospital and community-based services to patients within the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital who have experienced injuries from community violence (CVI) violent injury through assessment, crisis intervention and counseling. 
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates, service and productivity against benchmarks and scorecard measures which support Carilion Clinic.  Establishes program goals, community partner relationships and operating plans for the VIRS Team. This includes participation in data collection and interpretation. Contributes to the development of business and implementation plans with specific goals, objectives and timelines that support the fiscal and quality goals of CMC. Assists the Trauma Director and management team in design, development and implementation of program quality improvement initiatives and patient experience indicators
  • Encourages and manages consistent and timely open dialogue between VIRS staff, patients, families, community resources and payer organizations to ensure effective management of the patient's Plan of Care (POC) and transition of care plan. Assists the team in recognition and reduction of barriers that may affect the POC and the transition of care.
  • Manages the dissemination of appropriate information to stakeholders in an ongoing, timely and consistent manner. Establishes forums to engage in open, honest and proactive two-way communication. With staff and stakeholders, continuously evaluates the effectiveness of these communication pathways and leads the team in continuous improvement.
  • Prepares and monitors capital and operating budgets under the direction of the Director of Trauma.  Manages the VIRS Program functions in a fiscally responsible manner in compliance with Carilion policies and procedures. Responsible for data, grants management, and other reporting. Proactively identifies and implements cost effective initiatives. Will oversee the implementation of a crisis fund serving violently injured patient victims and their families.
  • Manages and monitors recruitment and hiring, training, and staff performance by incorporating training specific to Hospital Violence Injury Prevention Programs (HVIP). Responsible for staffing assignments, providing an appropriate work environment, establishing and monitoring  performance targets and improvement  initiatives such as workflow process changes, documentation enhancement audits and implementation of new equipment and technology. Conducts special projects as directed by the Director of Trauma.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable licensure requirements, certifications (including MLTSS et. Al) and accrediting standards of practice. The manager will be knowledgeable regarding Carilion System and Organizational rules and regulations as they relate to the program and staff functionality, and will ensure accountability.

Minimum Qualifications


Education: Masters of Social Work MSW from Accredited Institution is required.

Experience: Minimum of 4 years of social work experience in a health care facility. Management experience preferred. Certification in Care Management a plus.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Licensed Social Worker in the State of VA. Required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Ability to problem solve and to communicate effectively. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Must maintain competencies as a Clinical Social Worker.
