Job Summary


As a team member of the Trauma Service registrars are responsible for medical record analysis, data abstraction, performance improvement initiatives and overall data management specific to the trauma patient.  Must perform functions consistent with the registrar requirements for Level One Trauma Center accreditation as stated in the Hospital Resource Manual and participate in activities essential for the maintenance of a Level One Trauma Center in the Commonwealth of Virginia.


Uses technical expertise to execute all data management activities with focus on maintaining the Trauma Registry database through data abstraction.  Utilizes expertise in ICD-10 Coding principles, Abbreviated Injury Scale, E-codes and interpretation of Emergency Medical Services prehospital reports. Must have a strong command of medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology in assuring accuracy and consistency of data.


Provides staff support for the trauma service Program Director, Trauma Coordinator and Performance Improvement Specialist.  Assists with a variety of PI initiatives and data analysis, organization and coordination of various trauma related conferences and maintains conference minutes.


Must possess skill in complex medical coding, data collection and management.  Requires frequent interaction with medical and other professional staff in data collection and confirmation. Provides simple to complex reporting studies.  Work involves understanding of medical records system(s) throughout Carilion Clinic.


Function involves organization-wide communication, often interacting with other prehospital personnel, physicians, other healthcare facilities and/or agencies. Must be completely familiar with access to and use of hospital data/information systems electronic medical records, and Commonwealth of Virginia pre-hospital record system.  Works in a quiet office environment with frequent use of computer visualization and keyboarding.  Works with minimum supervision and must be organized and self-directed.  Must provide own transportation for occasional travel between Carilion facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of state approved paramedic or registered nursing program.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years prior prehospital patient care (i.e. EMS/paramedic) or nursing experience. Knowledgeable in Electronic Health Information Management records systems, HIM coding, or like experience is preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a paramedic or registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Thorough understanding of ICD-10codes; computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, and medical records database/system; accurate keyboarding skills; strong verbal & written communication skills on a level to work actively and effectively with medical and professional staff; team building and problem solving skills.
