The Vice President for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine serves as a dyad partner with the Chair of the Department. The incumbent reports directly to the EVP/COO of Carilion Clinic. Our focus is the provision of patient centered, measurement based, high quality psychiatry in clinical practice, research, training, and education. The Department is growing and has experienced significant growth in all of its service areas, including our planned construction of a 37,000 sq ft ambulatory multi-specialty psychiatry practice in September 2023.

The Vice President provides energetic, collaborative operational leadership for Acute Inpatient Care, Psychiatric Consultation Liaison, Psychiatric Emergency Services, Interventional Psychiatry, and a broad range of Ambulatory Psychiatric sub-specialty services. Position includes strategic planning and execution, and resource management.

The successful candidate will have a track record of developing and implementing proactive strategic initiatives and integrated approaches to ensure positive patient and business outcomes as measured by key performance indicators. The candidate must have experience in articulating a strategic vision and influencing others through consensus building and collaborative leadership. Additional qualifications include experienced leadership of behavioral medicine and psychiatric operations with superior analytical, interpersonal, communication (oral and written) skills. The candidate will also have a proven capacity for building a high-performing team, credibility, and role modeling collegiality and developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including physicians, executives, and staff. The applicant must have great attention to detail and be able to manage the budgetary, along with our financial staff and leaders, and other operational aspects of the department. Established performance in positioning services in optimal markets and locations for strategic service line growth is desirable. Experience in mentorship, facilitation, multi-disciplinary team building, and conflict resolution skills are required.

What We Require:

Education: Master’s degree in health care, nursing, business or related field required. 

Experience: Ten (10) years demonstrating progressively responsible leadership experience roles in health care, physician practice management large hospital or health system or operations management required. 

Licensure,  certification, and/or registration: Licensed as appropriate to the position in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Proactive strategic planner with highly focused project management skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus. Must be a well-organized and self-directed individual. Must relate to people at all organizational levels and possess excellent communication skills. Serves as a mentor; excellent facilitation and conflict resolution skills. Experience in leadership of teams or projects beyond a departmental level required. Proficient computer skills required.
