How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:


Supports the Director, CMC Emergency Management and Safety in the coordination, development , implementation and monitoring of safety management operations based on identified needs, guidelines, regulatory standards, policies and established goals with a high level of customer satisfaction. Responsible for safety management and regulatory compliance at the Carilion Medical Center (CMC), and is available as a resource to related sites, including CMC clinics and medical offices, and liaisons with appropriate external organizations and stakeholders.  Proactively develops, implements/coordinates, and monitors the safety-related education, processes, and policies at CMC; serves as in-house subject matter expert. May consult with other Carilion community hospitals, as directed.
 

  • Supports the Director, CMC Emergency Management and Safety, in the management of an effective and efficient Safety and Environment of Care program, to include but not be limited to, regulatory compliance.  Stays abreast of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including JC, OSHA, etc., and industry best practices.
  • Assists with the creation and coordination of a multi-disciplinary Safety and Environment of Care program at CMC.
  • Supports applicable quality improvement programs through the development, implementation, and coordination of quality improvement processes. 
  • Develops, maintains, and coordinates the Hazard Communication Program (e.g. hazard identification, mitigation, planning, education, and accident investigation); includes environment of care rounding.
  • Develops, maintains, and coordinates the Chemical Hygiene Program (e.g.  a program which sets forth procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment and work practices that (i) are capable of protecting employees from the hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used in the workplace and (ii) meets the regulatory requirements of a Chemical Hygiene Plan). Includes audits, planning, education, etc.
  • Develops, maintains, and coordinates the Industrial Safety Program (e.g. recognizes, eliminates, and controls occupational health hazards.
  • Assists in the identification and assessment of safety and Environment of Care risks and/or vulnerabilities at CMC, and the subsequent mitigation of those risks and vulnerabilities.  Assists in the coordination and management of appropriate information and documents associated with the CMC Safety and Environment of Care Programs. Presents reports as needed or requested.
  • Provides consultation to the Director, Environmental Services (EVS) on medical waste management issues as directed.
  • Provides in-services and education to CMC staff for the daily provision of regulated waste handling and collection services, and other appropriate safety and environment of care issues, as directed.  
  • Creates a safe working environment while providing opportunities to develop maximum potential. 
  • Holds self and team accountable for maintaining the highest possible performance standards in order to serve internal and external customers.
  • Defines performance measures and monitors/evaluates progress made toward measurable customer satisfaction criteria.
  • Collaboratively implements programs and best practices to continuously enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Negotiates and ensures compliance with contractual agreements.

What We Require:


Education: Bachelor’s degree required in related field or equivalent 8 years of experience required. EPA/RCRA training required. OSHA 10 hour General Industry required, 30 hour preferred. 

Experience: Four years of business related experience required with at least two of those years in emergency management or safety.  Training in hazardous materials, incident command, and disaster response required. 

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Virginia motor vehicle operator license required.  Hazmat/HAZWOPER Operations, NEHA, HEM, CHESP or other national level credentials preferred.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a driving record within the scope of Carilion’s Driver Regulations. Must be a team player, have a strong sense of integrity, be approachable, and demonstrate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy. Must possess strong interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and decision making skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar computer applications required.
