The senior accountant will support Carilion's financial reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis performing journal entries, analysis, reconciliations, and providing assistance with other accounting duties as needed. The senior accountant will be responsible for the accounting oversight and GAAP financial reporting related to a multi-billion dollar portfolio of assets under management. This position also routinely engages with external auditors to ensure disclosures regarding the portfolio are complete, accurate, and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
In addition to performing the Staff Accountant level functions, this position provides leadership, training and guidance for other staff members. Senior accountants are responsible for the more complex processes and transactions of the Carilion corporate accounting function. This includes researching complex accounting transactions and recommending appropriate accounting treatment, understanding and optimizing end to end financial processes, maintaining current documentation of accounting processes and technical accounting approaches, development of related policies and procedural documents, and educating staff and management throughout the organization on related financial items.
- Facilitates the growth and development of Staff Accountants by assigning tasks and responsibilities, reviews Staff Accountant work products, assists with training and development, assists with onboarding new team members, researches problems and provides thoughtful solutions, communicates to relevant internal and external parties on financial matters, provides resolution of complex accounting issues, and provides direction to work groups.
- Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of Carilion’s financial processes, policies, and related systems (e.g. general ledger, patient accounting, accounts receivable, materials management, fixed assets, etc.) as they relate to the role’s area of responsibility. Assists other staff members with development of related process and system knowledge and understanding.
- Prepares and reviews complex financial documentation and communications, including but not limited to, supporting schedules and financial reports as required by bond agreements, auditors, and regulatory bodies as well as to support management financial decisions and estimates such as health expense, implicit and explicit revenue concessions, etc..
- May be required to assist in all aspects of the Carilion annual external audit as well as various other internal and external audits including reviewing staff’s audit schedules, engaging with auditors to answer questions and clarify documentation. preparing various financial statements and footnotes, and any other requests as needed.
- Interfaces and collaborates with other Carilion departments to initiate and develop process efficiencies and implement such improvements as they align with overall organizational goals and mission.
- Assists with new accounting software system implementations or upgrades, including design of key processes, elements, and testing as it relates to areas of responsibility.
- Collaborates with other departments to ensure ongoing accurate integration of operational and patient data systems with overall ERP or financial systems. Applies sophisticated knowledge to assist in the correct mapping between the two systems. Develop and maintain databases to assist in appropriate financial classification within the accounting systems.
- Stays abreast of accounting literature and developments in authoritative standards and interpretations as it relates to role and responsibilities.
- Performs all Accounting duties as assigned by supervisor.
What We Require:
Education: Bachelor’s in accounting required or Master’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting preferred.
Experience: 6-10 years experience in the Accounting field, required.
Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CMA or CPA designation or exam qualification preferred, but not required.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to understand interrelationships of a multi-company environment. Must maintain client service approach while maintaining the interests of the system as a whole. Required to meet frequent, non-negotiable deadlines while maintaining multiple priorities. Requires general knowledge of PC’s and office equipment, excellent working knowledge of computerized accounting systems, spreadsheet and word processing software, with Microsoft Windows/Excel/Word preferred. Requires excellent writing, interpersonal and analytical skills.
